INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett introduced his proposed budget for 2019 to the City-County Council Monday night.
The budget includes $126 million for infrastructure including resurfacing streets, repairing bridges and fixing sidewalks.
Hogsett proposed bonds as a way to pay for that infrastructure, specifically the state will continue to increase the gas tax by one penny each year.
The mayor is requesting to bond against that growth in revenue each year (from the one penny increase) for the next four years.
Also, the budget proposes funding for two IMPD recruit classes, with a projected net gain of 31 new officers.
Hogsett is also requesting new surveillance cameras for IMPD. Right now, IMPD has cameras at 90 different locations. The budget proposes funding to replace all of them, and also add cameras at 25 more locations.
The budget proposal also includes funding to buy and tear down the OakTree Apartments near 42nd Street and Post Road. The complex has been blamed for attracting crime, especially in recent months.
