INDIANAPOLIS -- Dozens of Hoosiers are still cleaning up after strong winds uprooted trees and caused other damage across central Indiana over the weekend.
Some of those trees and the debris landed on cars, barely missing homes and power lines.
A tree on Joe Morgan’s property landed in the road, so he called a service to clean it up.
“It was blocking half the road and it took all we had just to get it out of the road,” Morgan said. “I don’t want it in the road and I don’t want anybody getting hurt. So best to just get it cleaned up.”
Tree trimming companies say some of the biggest steps homeowners can take to protect their home from downed trees is to avoid planting near power lines or too close to your home and to inspect your trees often.
If your neighbor’s tree falls in your yard or damages your property, insurance lawyers say it’s still your problem to deal with, unless you can prove your neighbor knew they had a dead tree.
The Indiana Department of Insurance also recommends that you contact your agent to determine the extent of your own coverage.
