INDIANAPOLIS -- A church on Indianapolis' far Eastside is helping to alleviate some of the hunger in the middle of one of Indy's food deserts.
Mount Carmel Church is about three miles from the nearest store, which is a Kroger on Pendleton Pike - in an area considered a food desert.
A food desert is defined by the USDA as an area that's half a mile or more from a full-service grocery store.
Pastor Theron Williams says it's his church's job to step up and assist the community.
That's why Mount Carmel Church started a small farm on their property, growing 25 different kinds of vegetables on a half-acre plot behind the parking lot.
The church holds a Farmer's Market the first Sunday of each month and sells the produce.
