MOUNT VERNON, Ind. -- The Mount Vernon Community School Corporation has become the first school in the state to be STEM certified in all grade levels.

The Indiana Department of Education said " Schools are chosen to receive certification based on their commitment to teaching the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math throughout the entire school , adding " STEM certified schools exemplify a highly non-traditional approach to education, employing a great deal of inquiry, project-based learning, community engagement, entrepreneurship, student-centered classrooms, integration into humanities and related arts and out of school STEM activities."

" A quality education begins with amazing educators and excellent material," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction.  She added, " Materials rooted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics help prepare our students for a successful life beyond high school. "

Maria Bond, director of community relations for Mt Vernon said " the Mt Vernon staff wholeheartedly accepted and supported this initiative and MVCSC is proud to become the first K-12 STEM Certified School district in the state and is thankful to the staff for embracing STEM education.

There is a great need for a more skilled workforce according to the Indiana Department of Education. And local employers are trying to find and hire a workforce that has the proper skills to work in various jobs that call for specific STEM abilities.

In order to achieve this status, the school system hired STEM teachers, placed robotics clubs in every grade level, had students make and put up STEM posters throughout each building, created a High -Tech Academy at the high school, and got community partners and businesses to integrate STEM in the schools.
