ANDERSON, Ind. -- Four people and three dogs were rescued in two separate incidents where kayaks overturned in the White River in Madison County Saturday afternoon.

Crews were first called to the White River at the Madison Avenue bridge around 11:30 a.m. for two overturned kayaks carrying a father, his 18-year-old daughter and their dog.

Crews located the 18-year-old in her kayak stuck on a pile of debris under the Madison Avenue Bridge. Using a system of ropes they were able to pull her to safety. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

She told crews that her father was in the second kayak with their dog tied to it when it overturned and carried them downstream.

The father was able to make it to shore down the river and pull himself out. He refused treatment at the scene. It is unclear if the dog was ever located.

The second incident happened around 2:30 p.m. Fire officials say two people had to be rescued after their kayak overturned in the river. No details about that rescue have been released at this time.
