INDIANAPOLIS – Can you imagine living next to a house with yard piled high with stacks of tires? That’s the real situation for one east-side home and now, neighbors say they’re not only fed up, quite frankly, they’re scared of what they’re calling a major safety hazard.

So, working for you: We’re trying to get to the bottom of the problem. Why are the tires allowed there in the first place? And what is the city doing to get rid of them?

Daniel Rector says several months ago, the tires first started towering beside his home in the 1200 block of Worcester Avenue.

Gradually, he says the collection grew to what it is today: A mess.

“I mean, a couple stacks of tires is no big deal,” Rector said. “But when they get like that – there’s well over 150 tires there.”

He says the couple who lives there sells used tires around the clock.

“We’ve got a camera here, and we’re just watching them load the tires on and off 24 hours a day,” he said. “They never stop.”

It concerns not just Rector, but other neighbors who told RTV6 off-camera they were scared to speak out for fear of retaliation.

“It’s a fire hazard. It’s a mosquito trap. It’s also an eyesore,” Rector said.

Despite the obvious issue and complaints to the city, Rector says this wreck of rubber isn’t being resolved quickly.

The neighbors who collect the tires didn’t answer when we knocked.

But the city’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Services says yes, this is a problem, and it could even be a possible health violation, not to mention a zoning concern.

Twice on Monday, inspectors were out looking at the issue, working toward a resolution, which Rector says cannot come soon enough.

“I’m at my wit’s end,” he said. “I really don’t know what to do.”
