SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- A Speedway man was stabbed in the heart during an argument with a man who gave him a ride home from downtown Indianapolis, according to criminal charges filed last week.

Officers were called to an apartment in the 6400 block of Lake Breeze Way around 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 5 on a report of a disturbance.

They arrived to find two men restraining another man – later identified as 32-year-old Demond Welch.

As officers approached, one of the men handed them a broken knife and said, “This is what he used.”

Police learned Welch had reportedly given one of the men, Ibrahim Aloqaily, a ride home from downtown Indianapolis, where several of them had been celebrating with a friend who was moving out of the country soon.

When Welch and Aloqaily arrived at the latter’s home in Speedway, Welch allegedly held a knife to one of Aloqaily’s roommates and demanded money. The men told police Welch also took an Xbox from the apartment.

Police said they later found the Xbox in Welch’s car.

The men told police that as Welch attempted to leave he got into a fight with Aloqaily.

Aloqaily didn’t realize he’d been stabbed during the fight until police arrived and saw the front of his shirt was soaked in blood.

Aloqaily was transported to the hospital, where it was determined he suffered two stab wounds to the chest and one to the back. One of those wounds was deep enough that it lacerated the perdicardium – the membrane that encloses the heart – and required immediate surgery to repair.

Welch was arrested and taken into custody on preliminary  charges of armed robbery and battery. He was released on Friday on a $50,000 bond.

Welch’s next court appearance was a pretrial conference scheduled for Dec. 27.
