MARION, Ind. -- A former lieutenant detective with the Grant County Sheriff's Department is facing criminal charges after Indiana State Police said he stole prescription medication from the department's property room.

Shelby Taylor, 42, is charged with official misconduct, theft and possession of a controlled substance.

Taylor was one of three employees who had access to the secure property room, authorities said in a news release. Between March 11, 2015 and April 2, 2018, Taylor removed prescription drugs that had been submitted as evidence, Indiana State Police said.

Taylor also completed documentation indicating the evidence had been either destroyed or submitted to a lab for testing, but there is no evidence either of those occurred, according to Indiana State Police.

An ISP detective began an investigation in August at the request of Sheriff Reggie Nevels. Taylor resigned from the sheriff's department the same day.

An initial court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.
