COLUMBUS, Ind. – Several people in Columbus, Indiana showed their support for “dreamers,” those who face deportation as President Trump announced his plan to phase out the DACA program Tuesday.

DACA protected undocumented immigrants – known as “dreamers” - from being deported. DACA participants were brought to the US as children.

Trump’s decision impacts more than 800,000 immigrants who could lose their legal status once the program is officially phased out.

Edwin Manuel, who attended the rally, said it’s nice to be supported by the community.

“It's a wonderful feeling to know that there are people who care about us,” said Manuel. “This is what I depend on… this work permit… the ability to drive.”

DACA applications will no longer be accepted, but work permits can be renewed if they expire before March 5 of 2018.

“Unfortunately, I'm one of the DACA recipients that will not be able to renew,” said Joselina Medina. “We depended on this to fulfill our dreams and now it's taken away and I don't think that's right.”

Trump said Congress has six months to legalize DACA, and if they cannot, he will “revisit the issue.”
